Aug 08 1993 La Mama, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan

Soundboard Recording. A number of minor glitches - pops & crackles - throughout the recording; don't know whether these are present on the master or have crept in over time. Also, one 2 sec cut-out, disc 2, track 1. Even with those faults, an extraordinary sounding set.

DVDs/videos

?? 1991 Knitting Factory, NY, USA

83 minutes

NTSC DVD, 2 disc set. Exact date unknown. Features Haino with John Zorn, Yamatsuka Eye and Kevin Sharp (?). Audience shot, from immediate front of stage, great quality, lots of camera movement.
Disc 2 also features:

?? 1991 CBGBs, NY, USA

21 minutes

NTSC DVD. Exact date unknown. Features Haino with John Zorn and Kevin Sharp (I think...not 100% sure). Audience shot, from about 10m back, a few audience heads in shot. VG+ image and audio quality. Some video artefacts, eg, thin white lines travelling briefly down the screen.
On the same DVD as the Knitting Factory, 1995, set. DVD also features a brief (5 min) clip of Naked City from The Puck Building, NYC, 31st Dec 1989.

Jul 03 1992 Knitting Factory, NY, USA

112 minutes

NTSC DVD, 2 disc set. Features Haino with John Zorn, Thurston Moore, David Shea, Cyro Baptista, Andy Haas, and Kevin Sharp (?). Audience shot, from several rows back from front of stage. Because of that, camera movement is limited and we often get just head shots of musicians for long periods. But there is enough movement to still make it an enjoyable watch, and the actual picture quality is excellent.

Oct 18 1993 Tonic, NY, USA

60 minutes

NTSC DVD. Incomplete, no complete video recording in circulation. Image quality is very good, grainy b&w; when zoomed out, it is rather blurry; the author has applied software FX for long periods, which is never a good idea; audio quality is excellent.

?? 1995 NMC, Knitting Factory, NY, USA

35 minutes

NTSC DVD. Exact date unknown. Features various permutations of Haino, John Zorn, Yamatsuka Eye, Thurston Moore and Christian Marclay. Audience shot, from very close to the stage. Excellent image and audio quality. Some video artefacts, eg, thin white lines travelling briefly down the screen. Also, two brief losses of colour. I have a VCD version of this material which doesn't suffer from the colour loss but in all other respects is inferior in quality.
On the same DVD as the CBGBs, 1991, set. DVD also features a brief (5 min) clip of Naked City from The Puck Building, NYC, 31st Dec 1989.

Nihon No Jikkenteki Na Ongaku

2 hour NTSC DVD, compiling live material from Japanese underground music concerts in 2004/05. A heavy Haino presence, as well as Munehiro Narita, Hijokaidan, Shibusashirazu, Otomo Yoshihide, a ton of stuff, all top quality, all essential. Total respect to Mads & Phil for overseeing this one.
